Serving with Purpose

When I was growing up in Kenya, my grandmother would often tell me stories about the importance of giving back to our community. She'd share tales of our ancestors who would volunteer their time and resources to help those in need, simply because it was the right thing to do. Those stories stuck with me, and as I grew older, I began to realize that serving others wasn't just a moral obligation, but a way to live out my faith.

In my book "Whispers Beneath the Baobab", I share more about how my childhood experiences shaped my understanding of purpose and service. But what I've come to understand even more deeply is that when we use our gifts, talents, and resources to serve others, it's not just a good thing to do – it's a powerful way to demonstrate our love for God.

For me, this lesson has been particularly poignant as I've navigated the highs and lows of my own faith journey. As a pastor, author, and speaker, I've had the privilege of serving in various roles and capacities. But even with all the blessings and opportunities, there have been times when I felt drained, uncertain, or even burnt out.

That's when I realized that serving others wasn't just about doing something good for them – it was also about recharging my own soul. When I focus on helping others, my worries about myself tend to fade away. I'm reminded that my purpose is bigger than my own needs and desires.

In the midst of our busy lives, it's easy to get caught up in our own struggles and challenges. But when we shift our focus from our own problems to serving others, something remarkable happens. We begin to see that our purpose isn't just about what we can accomplish for ourselves – but what we can do for God.

As I look back on my journey, I'm grateful for the moments when I've stepped out of my comfort zone and served with intentionality. Those experiences have taught me that serving others is not only a way to love our neighbors as ourselves (Mark 12:31), but also a way to experience joy, fulfillment, and purpose.

As you navigate your own faith journey, I encourage you to explore how you can use your gifts, talents, and resources to serve others. Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone – it might just be the most rewarding thing you've ever done.
